Semblance Studios is a creative art studio creating original, project-specific artwork for hotels, cruise ships, restaurants, residences and luxury developments. It works mainly with art procurement firms, art consultancies and interior designers, interpreting a brief and developing a coherent body of approved artwork for the project.
Custom commissions lead the business. Placement, adaptation and licensing of existing artwork are established secondary services.
Internal positioning anchor:
> Original custom artwork for hospitality, commercial and interior-led projects, developed around the brief, space, aesthetic direction and practical requirements.
---
2. The Business Model
Semblance is the artwork-creation partner within a wider design and procurement process. It does not seek to replace art consultants, procurement firms, interior designers or production partners.
Every project is led directly by Gavin Goodman. Clients work with one senior creative lead from interpretation of the brief and visual direction through to approved artwork.
Most custom commissions end with delivery of high-resolution, production-ready artwork files and the agreed usage rights. Physical prints may occasionally be supplied by explicit agreement, particularly for local placements or individual acquisitions. Printing, framing, fabrication, shipping, installation and commercial-durability compliance are not standard Semblance services.
Copyright is normally retained by the creator. Licensing and reproduction rights are defined per project. A full copyright buyout may be priced separately where required.
---
3. Offers
There is no fixed offer ladder or public rate card. Work is scoped and priced per project.
3.1 Custom Artwork Commissions — Primary Offer
Semblance interprets a project brief and develops original artwork around the space, visual direction, palette, format and production requirements.
The scope may include:
- interpretation of the brief
- art direction and visual-direction development
- concept development and presentation
- development of the approved artwork
- agreed revision rounds
- preparation of high-resolution, production-ready files
- licensing or reproduction rights defined for the project
Projects may range from one artwork to several distinct bodies of work across a property or vessel.
Pricing normally combines the creative scope with licensing or reproduction requirements. Concept development can move quickly for procurement presentations, but this must not be confused with the time required to produce final artwork.
3.2 Existing Artwork: Placement, Adaptation and Licensing — Secondary Offer
Existing work may be:
- licensed as shown
- placed with little or no creative change
- adapted for a specific space, including changes to palette, background, composition, format or scale
- used as the starting point for a new commission
Placement and adaptation are commercially valid services, not lesser versions of a custom commission. They must be described accurately.
Only artwork specifically included in the Semblance catalogue may be offered through The Work for licensing, adaptation or commission development. That catalogue holds the work shown on the site plus additional and unselected pieces from the same series.
Gavin Goodman Fine Art limited editions remain separate and are never licensed or adapted for commercial reproduction. An individual fine-art print may occasionally be sold through Semblance as a physical limited-edition acquisition at the applicable fine-art price, supplied with its certificate of authenticity, as happened with Cramer & Bell. That is a print sale, not a licence.
The website's Work section is a curated visual showcase. The downloadable catalogue is the working selection document containing a broader range of available work, reference codes and specifications.

4. Primary and Secondary Audiences
Primary — Art Procurement and Art Consultancy Firms
Curators and consultants commissioning or sourcing artwork for hospitality, commercial and residential interiors on behalf of their clients. These firms are Semblance's clients and collaborators, not intermediaries to bypass.
Confirmed relationships include:
- Artlink: commissioned the BoTree Hotel, Meyer Werft and other cruise-related artwork projects
- Cramer & Bell: an art procurement company first contacted through Semblance; it later purchased a work from the Gavin Goodman Fine Art catalogue for a client. This was an existing-work sale rather than a custom Semblance commission, but the relationship originated through and was handled under the Semblance umbrella.
Secondary — Interior and Hospitality Decision-Makers
- hospitality-focused interior designers
- architectural studios
- hotel groups
- hospitality and property developers
- commercial developers
HK Design Studio is a confirmed example. It selected existing Gavin Goodman works for a new Singita luxury lodge in Africa and the works were supplied as physical prints.
End environments include hotels, cruise ships, restaurants, luxury developments, residences and offices, even when the direct client is the consultancy or studio managing the project.
Evidence Limitation
Several major projects have come through Artlink. This proves capability within that relationship but does not establish universal market needs. Do not generalise Artlink's preferences or processes to the entire procurement market. Diversifying beyond Artlink is a commercial priority.
---
5. Evidenced Client Needs
No verified body of direct client-pain language currently exists. Do not invent pain points, objections or buyer quotes.
Delivered projects demonstrate a need for:
- original artwork created around a specific brief
- existing artwork selected or adapted for a particular space
- a coherent body of work across multiple rooms or environments
- materially different visual directions within one project
- concepts clear enough for client presentation, review and approval
- artwork prepared to agreed dimensions and production specifications
- one senior creative lead across a substantial commission
- concept development that can fit procurement and presentation timelines
Future strategy should be refined using evidence from client emails, calls, briefs and interviews.
---
6. Positioning and Differentiation
Semblance's strongest distinction is not a claim of unlimited versatility. It is the evidence that one Creative Director can develop coherent bodies of work across materially different visual directions while maintaining direct oversight throughout.
The clearest proof is the Meyer Werft cruise-ship project: 27 artworks across four distinct spaces, each requiring its own subject matter, palette and visual treatment.
Supporting strengths:
- one senior creative relationship throughout the project
- more than 20 years of experience across photography, cinematography, advertising and fine art
- established visual judgement and production knowledge
- international project delivery
- 2021 Hasselblad Master in the Fine Art category
Fine-art recognition establishes authority but is not the business proposition. Commercial relevance, range of completed work, quality and reliable delivery lead.
Do not position Semblance around process novelty, technology or speed. Process is useful only insofar as it helps produce strong, approved work efficiently.
---
7. What Semblance Is Not
Semblance is not:
- Gavin Goodman's personal fine-art practice
- an advertising-photography portfolio
- a gallery or artist-representation platform
- an art procurement company
- a general interior-design service
- a fixed stock-art or print-catalogue operation
- a multi-artist roster
- a branding or content agency
- an AI product or technology studio
- a fabrication or installation contractor by default
- a high-volume social-content business
Gavin's fine-art practice may support Semblance's credibility. Limited-edition works may occasionally be purchased individually at gallery rate and supplied with a certificate of authenticity, but they are never licensed, adapted or made available for commercial reproduction through Semblance. This does not collapse the distinction between Semblance Studios and the Gavin Goodman fine-art practice.

8. Project Proof
The BoTree Hotel, London
Custom commission through Artlink. Semblance created 21 artworks across seven floors, displayed as triptychs at the lift-lobby entrances. The work drew on London's eighteenth- and nineteenth-century pleasure gardens and reinterpreted the period through contemporary portraiture and period-influenced dress.
Meyer Werft Cruise-Ship Project, Europe
Custom commission through Artlink. Semblance created 27 artworks across four distinct spaces on one vessel:
- traveller portraits combining map references and Mediterranean-inspired landscapes
- photographic portraits with sculptural headpieces referencing ship architecture
- warm, painterly botanical compositions
- minimal photographic works incorporating playing-card motifs
This is the strongest evidence of range under one creative lead.
Singita Luxury Lodge, Africa
Existing-work placement through HK Design Studio. Existing Gavin Goodman works were selected for a new luxury safari lodge and supplied as physical prints. The work offered a modern, minimal response to African themes rather than conventional safari imagery.
The Rockefeller Hotel, Cape Town
Existing-work placement across 400 rooms. The project came through Gavin's personal network rather than a procurement or design firm. It evidences scale, not the primary client-acquisition route.
Artlink Cruise Adaptation and Licensing Project
Existing works from the broader Ensundu series were adapted through changes to background and presentation, then licensed for approximately 2,000 stateroom reproductions. This proves that adaptation and high-volume licensing are established commercial services. The project is not part of the public launch portfolio.
Saatchi / Florida Hotel
Completed hospitality project involving triptych commissions across 420 rooms. Do not publish or use as public proof until client approval has been confirmed.
---
9. Market Context
Semblance operates in a specialist, concentrated and relationship-led B2B market. Relevant buyers include art procurement firms, art consultancies, interior-design studios, hospitality developers, hotel groups and cruise-line project teams.
The exact size of this audience has not been independently verified. Do not repeat unsupported estimates of the number of global decision-makers.
Commercial implications:
- credible project evidence matters more than high-volume content
- quality of relationship matters more than volume of reach
- targeted outreach is more appropriate than mass prospecting
- the website is the central credibility and conversion destination
- case studies are primary sales material, not decorative portfolio content
- procurement firms must be treated as clients and partners, not competitors
Print-catalogue platforms and large multi-material fabrication studios are adjacent parts of the market, not exact structural competitors.
Named competitor comparisons should be treated as provisional until reviewed using current primary sources.
---
10. Client Acquisition
Clients have arrived through:
- existing relationships
- referrals
- inbound discovery
- past targeted outreach
Cramer & Bell responded approximately one year after an initial Semblance email. This does not prove demand for custom commissions, but it demonstrates that carefully targeted outreach can have a long tail.
Priority Sequence
- Complete the website and strongest project case studies.
- Present BoTree, Meyer Werft, Singita and Rockefeller accurately.
- Re-engage existing and warm industry relationships.
- Build a researched list of relevant procurement, consultancy and interior-design firms.
- Use selective, personalised outreach supported by the most relevant project proof.
- Automate only after the manual approach is understood and has proved effective.
Channel Roles
- Website: primary credibility, proof and conversion destination
- Direct email: selective, researched and personalised business development
- LinkedIn: professional visibility and relationship support; quality over volume
- Instagram: visual credibility rather than the primary lead-generation channel
- SEO: long-term discovery through specific service and project pages
Avoid mass outreach, generic content volume, automated publishing without review and unproven thought-leadership claims.
---
11. Messaging Principles
- Lead with what Semblance creates and who it serves.
- Use completed project evidence instead of broad claims.
- Keep language clear, restrained, credible and client-facing.
- Prove range through the work; do not claim versatility.
- Keep commercial credibility ahead of Gavin's fine-art biography.
- Describe the relationship between the brief, space and finished artwork.
- Present direct creative oversight as a practical client benefit.
- Treat speed as an operational advantage, not the headline.
- Keep AI out of the positioning.
- Never present Semblance as replacing procurement firms or consultants.
- Distinguish custom commissions, placements, adaptations and licensing accurately.
Preferred Language
- original custom artwork
- project-specific artwork
- developed around the brief and space
- direct creative oversight
- hospitality and commercial interiors
- production-ready artwork files
- selected or adapted for the project
- licensed as shown
Claims to Avoid
- any brief in any style
- limitless or extreme versatility
- delivery at any scale without qualification
- turnkey art solution
- seamless installation
- commercial grade unless technically verified
- responsibility for printing, fabrication, shipping, compliance or installation unless specifically contracted
- a proprietary or named process without a documented method
- unsupported claims about client pain, market size or competitors
---
12. AI Boundary
AI is a tool within the workflow, not the product and not the positioning.
Semblance may use AI and other digital tools during research, concept development or artwork production where appropriate, always under Gavin Goodman's direct creative direction. Its use must never be misrepresented, but it should not be foregrounded in general brand or sales messaging.
Never describe Semblance as an “AI studio.”
---
13. Current Website Expression
The website is being developed as a working prototype and may change as design and implementation reveal better solutions.
Current direction:
- custom commissions lead
- completed projects provide the primary proof
- existing artwork is presented as a separate, established offer
- works can be licensed as shown, adapted for a specific space, or used as the starting point for a new commission
- The Work page remains visually led and does not function as an online shop
- reference codes and specifications belong in the downloadable catalogue, not beneath website images
- Semblance remains visually and structurally distinct from Gavin Goodman's fine-art practice
Exact page copy belongs in the Site Content document. Page structure, imagery, placeholders and technical decisions belong in the Site Build Brief and design.md.
---
14. Immediate Business Priorities
- Complete the new website design and build.
- Build strong public case studies around verified project facts.
- Prepare a concise, practical artwork catalogue for licensing and adaptation enquiries.
- Reconnect with existing relationships and begin selective outreach after the website is credible.
- Capture installation imagery, briefs, outcomes and client language consistently for every new project.
- Update positioning and acquisition decisions as stronger market evidence becomes available.
